Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. – Psalm 35:1
David is in trouble. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
David had enemies that pursued him, enemies that were too strong for him (v10). People who falsely accused him and repaid him evil for good (v11-12). What was David’s response? David called on the Lord and asked the Lord to contend with his enemies on his behalf. That is his first and confident response.
David’s confidence came from a vibrant relationship that he had with God. From knowing his God who was more than able to save him. David came to Him in humility acknowledging his own helplessness and his need for the Lord.
Psalm 63 gives a vivid picture of David’s relationship with God. He began the psalm saying, you, God are my God. David had a very personal relationship with the Lord. His relationship with the Lord involved his whole being. He said he had seen the Lord in the sanctuary (v3) and his eyes beheld the glory of the Lord. Then he said he would praise the Lord as long as he lives (v4) and that involved his mouth and lips. Further, he says that he remembers the Lord on his bed through the watches of the night.
The Lord was part of David’s entire day and night and all through his life. And it is based on this relationship that David confidently turned to the Lord when in trouble.
Every one of us has times of trouble. If we, like David, are to turn to God for help, we need to have an on-going, vibrant relationship with him.
Lord, I want to know you so well that I can turn to you for my every need, I pray.
