…so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. – Deuteronomy 14:23B
The people of Israel were to tithe. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
They were to give one tenth of their income to the Lord as their tithe. They were to use part of it for their celebratory meal in the presence of the Lord and the rest was for the priest, and every third year for the poor too. And the purpose for this command was that the people would learn to revere the Lord. The promise attached was that the Lord would bless all the work of their hands (v29b).
The New Testament does not speak specifically about tithing but does speak with great clarity about the principle of giving. Christian giving is not just a financial exercise but a spiritual matter.
God commands us to give and to give generously. The Lord set us the ultimate example of generous giving when He gave us all that we have: the world we live in, the life we have and most importantly the salvation we have in Christ through whom we have the hope of eternal life. Giving honours God. Giving also edifies oneself and imparts strength and maturity to the church.
We are called to give. Give of our time, our resources and our talents. Giving is to be regular, proportional and planned (1 Corinthians 16:1-4). Giving is also to be generous, freely given and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9).
And yet, the fact remains, God is nobody’s debtor. It is beyond the realm of possibilities that anyone has the ability to out give God. ‘Even if I give the whole of my worth to Him, He will find a way to give back to me much more than I gave’ (Charles Spurgeon).
How are you giving today?
Lord that I may ever honour you by my giving, I pray.
