Choose A Gentle Answer (Judges 8:1-21) RELATIONSHIPS

Published on Apr 2, 2025

Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?” And they challenged him vigorously. – Judges 8:1

The Ephraimites were offended. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

When Gideon called out to them, the Ephraimites joined in the fight against Midian. Yet, they were upset that Gideon did not call them before the battle started. They seemed more concerned with recognition rather than the overall good of Israel. Instead of being jealous about the recognition that others received, the Ephraimites should have been happy that God’s people were rescued and that they had some part in the victory. Jealousy often hinders the work of God.

Now Gideon could have taken offense too. But Gideon chose to take the high road. He deals graciously with them. He recounts their accomplishments and took very little credit for his own valiant effort. That response caused the resentment of the Ephraimites to subside. (v2-3)

We have friends like this too.  Gideon’s response is a great example to follow. Take a humble view of yourself and focus on the other. Give a gentle answer.

The Bible in Proverbs 15:1 says, a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. When someone chides or quarrels with you, it is easy to answer back in anger. It takes greater and God-given strength and grace to give a soft answer.

Is there someone who has been vehemently quarrelling with you, who needs a gentle answer from you?

Lord, give me your grace to give a gentle answer when someone offends me, I pray.

Beyond Ourselves (Psalm 102:1-28) LOVE

The poorest, the most difficult person, the most ignorant convert, every single one is precious to the Lord and so is to be precious to the church of God.
