So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.2 Samuel 9:11

There was a loud knock on the door of Makir. There stood the king’s soldiers with the summons for Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, King Saul’s grandson. Mephibosheth, who had been living in hiding, was petrified. It was a common practice for the leader of the new dynasty to execute every potential heir from the previous dynasty. At the news of the death of Saul and Jonathan, his nurse had gathered Mephibosheth and fled, leading to an accident that left him lame in both his legs. And Mephibosheth had been living in hiding ever since.

On arriving at the palace, Mephibosheth fell face down in David’s presence. But David was quick to allay his fears. He assured him that he wanted to honour his covenant to his father Jonathan to show kindness to his descendants, (1 Samuel 20). David promised to restore all the lands of Saul to him. Further, he gave him the honour of a close relationship with himself saying that he shall eat at David’s table for the rest of his life.

David is a picture of God’s grace and we are like Mephibosheth. We were weak, hiding and poor, separated from our King because of our ancestors and our own deliberate actions. But our King sought us in His love. Our King’s kindness to us is based on a covenant. We have the invitation to be part of the heavenly banquet of our King.

But we need to accept His offer of grace in humility. We are also called to be like David, to minister and serve others.

Thank you, Lord, for your grace and may it flow through me too, I pray.
