How good and pleasant it is for God’s people to Live together in unity! – Psalm 133:1
The Psalmist is calling us to behold! | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Psalm 133 is attributed to King David. He probably wrote it when he was finally received as king over all the tribes of Israel, ending a terrible season of national division and discord.
After a long time of violence, war, and fighting, finally, there is unity and peace. And David says behold, it is worthy of notice. David points out how good and pleasant unity amongst God’s people is.
Good is what we ought to do, what God requires of us, it is our duty. And it is good to live in unity. But if it is only good, then it could become a chore. But when it not just good but pleasant, it makes a big difference. Pleasant is when we rejoice, it is our delight. So, to dwell together in unity is not just right and our duty, but it is also our delight and joy.
To dwell in unity is to have oneness of heart, of mind, of spirits. David was referring to relationships among God’s people. This unity will be tested because they dwell together. Often it is easier to dwell in unity with those who are distant and far away.
This was a song that was especially relevant for pilgrims who came from many different walks of life, regions, and tribes, gathering together for the one purpose of worshipping God in Jerusalem. Our love for God should bind us to joyfully live in unity among believers.
How can you be a channel of peace and reconciliation in your church?
Lord, may my love for you drive me to be a channel of your peace and unity, I pray.
