When Life Is Not Fair (Genesis 37:12-36) TRUST GOD

Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard. – Genesis 37:36

Joseph’s life changed radically and oh so quickly. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

His father, Isaac, had sent him to Shechem to see how his brothers were doing. And Joseph, obedient and willing, set off immediately, only to find that they had moved to Dothan. Now, Dothan was a good twelve miles further.

Joseph could have returned from Shechem; he would still be obeying his father. But the fact that he goes the extra mile shows his genuine concern for his brothers. And what did he get in return? His brothers sold him as a slave to Potiphar.

Joseph’s life changes, drastically. From being the favourite son of his father, Isaac, he became a slave in a strange land. From the happy comfort of his home to the hard reality of slavery. From being the one who is served in his father’s house, to being a servant. What a sea change!

And all because Joseph obeyed his father and went the extra mile for his brothers? Now how is that fair? Joseph’s situation was not fair. And to be treated like this, by his very own brothers, made it even more painful. He sure did not deserve to be treated like this.

Now, Joseph could be angry and bitter, or he could choose to trust God. Joseph chose to trust God and the rest, as they say, is history.

God’s thoughts, are not our thoughts, nor are His ways, our ways (Isaiah 55:8). God has a plan for your life too. Would you choose, like Joseph, to trust God, even when you don’t understand?

Lord, help me trust you, even when life is unfair, I pray.
