Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. – Psalm 96:1-2

There is no author attributed to this psalm but some of the verses are from the song David sang in 1 Chronicles 16:12-33. This psalm is interesting in that, it addresses widening circles, first speaking to the people of God and then to all the nations of the earth and finally to all of creation.

The psalmist is calling man and creation to sing to the Lord. The psalmist is saying three things. Saints who have received new awareness of His love, mercy and grace are to sing Him a new song.

The psalmist then calls all the earth to sing to the Lord God Almighty for He is not a local deity of the Israelite people, rather God of all the earth. These songs were not limited to songs of celebrations, but were to be proclamations of His salvation, His glory and wonders to the entire world, to all the nations.

Finally, the psalmist says the call is to proclaim every day. It is not to be just a once in a way happening, but a proclamation for every day.  Luther said, ‘other news delights us only at first hearing; but good news of our redemption is sweet from day to day.’ And so, for all of the redeemed and the created, singing, praising and worshipping the Lord is to be a every day, on-going, passionate part of our lives.

Would you say that the Lord is receiving your praises each day?

Lord that I would praise you with songs my whole life, I pray.

Psalm 89, 96, 100, 101, 105, 132
