Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to His anointed. He answers him from His heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of His right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. – Psalm 20:6-7

Yet this psalm is different as it is in the voice of a multitude that prays for the King of Israel, as he stands ready to go into battle. It could be that David took the spontaneous prayer of the people and made it into a song to recall the spiritual strength of the moment.
This was a stirring cry from the hearts of the people for their king, who are tensely aware of the life and death issues of battle. They pray for his safety and they pray for God’s blessing and protection over him.
And in the above verses, David draws a strong contrast and affirms his own stand. He points out that some trust in chariots and horses, but his trust was in God alone. David was counting on God, not man. David put his trust in the person, the character of God. He didn’t carry the name of the Lord as a magical charm.
The name of God speaks of the comprehensive character of God. The name of God is an expression of His faithfulness to His covenant with Israel. David recognized that God had anointed and appointed him. And so, he was confident that God would give him victory too.
We are all engaged in spiritual battle. And God gives us victory when we depend on Him and not people or the world.
Are you living in victory each day?
Lord, increase my trust in you, I pray.
